Applying Lean Six Sigma to the Environment

VSM with Energy Usage

One way to increase visibility to energy usage and help find opportunities is by including energy data into the data boxes of a traditional value stream map (VSM). Watch a free course on VSM >>>

The Lean, Energy and Climate Toolkit suggests adding the energy data into the VSM data boxes
Here is an example from the Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing at the University of Kentucky, showing a break out of electric demand, electric usage and steam.

You can learn more by watching the recorded webinar, Sustainable Value Stream Mapping for Spirits, Brewing and Wine Making

A similar approach is the use of carbon emissions (CO2) for the timeline in addition to time and energy. In a paper titled “Energy Analysis via Value Stream Mapping” they present a case study with CO2 emissions beneath the timeline to show the impact by process area.
